Vafa Naraghi performing — Becoming South African

About the Show

Becoming
South African

Becoming South African is Vafa's most personal and powerful work to date; a one-man journey through identity, belonging, and what it truly means to call South Africa home.

Rooted in his experience growing up in Mahikeng at the tail end of apartheid and into the hopeful, chaotic promise of a new democracy, Vafa reflects on what it meant to be a Persian boy in a place where identity was both hyper-visible and constantly shifting.

Through his signature blend of sharp wit and heartfelt storytelling, Vafa brings audiences along as he unpacks the absurdities, contradictions, and quiet beauty of a democracy still trying to define itself.

With disarming humour, Becoming South African tackles themes like xenophobia, mental health, masculinity, inequality, and national pride. Always with a lightness of touch and an invitation to lean in rather than look away.

Equal parts hilarious, heartfelt, and provocative — it invites South Africans to laugh at ourselves, see ourselves more clearly, and imagine who we could still become, not despite our differences, but because of them.

About Vafa

Vafa
Naraghi

Comedian. Engineer. Bridge-builder. Proudly South African.

Raised in Mahikeng to parents of Persian descent, Vafa speaks six languages — including Setswana, isiXhosa, and Afrikaans — and embodies the rich, complex fabric of post-apartheid South Africa. His journey from a multicultural childhood to becoming one of the country's most distinctive comedic voices — a two-time Comics Choice Award winner — mirrors the story of a nation still defining itself.

Over the past decade, his blend of sharp observational humour and heartfelt storytelling has made him a household name — not just for his laughs, but for his ability to connect across cultures, generations, and lived experiences.

Vafa's comedy is grounded in service to humanity: a way to start conversations, shift perspectives, and build bridges in a country that desperately needs them.
